Early Life and Introduction to Water Polo

As a college athlete at Princeton University, Ashleigh Johnson quickly made a name for herself as one of the best goalies in the country. In fact, during her freshman year, she was named the NCAA Division I Goalkeeper of the Year. She continued to excel throughout her college career, setting multiple records and earning a long list of accolades.

Johnson's impressive performances at the college level earned her a spot on the United States Women's National Water Polo Team in 2014. Her talent and dedication paid off, as she helped the team win gold at the Pan American Games in 2015 and the FINA World Championships in 2017.

In addition to her Olympic gold medal, Johnson has been recognized as the top goalie in the world on multiple occasions, including being named the FINA Female Water Polo Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019. Johnson played a key role in the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team's gold medal victory over Italy. In fact, Johnson had a whopping 17 saves in the final match, which made her a hero for her team.


Johnson was also named the best goalkeeper of the 2016 Olympics. This was a huge achievement and solidified her as one of the best water polo players in the world. Additionally, she became the first Black woman to make the U.S. Olympic Water Polo Team, which was a major accomplishment and something that Johnson is incredibly proud of.

As a team, the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team has won several championships and titles. Johnson has been a key player on these teams and has contributed to the success of the team in a significant way. In addition to the 2016 Olympics, the U.S. Women's Water Polo Team won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games and at the 2017 FINA World Championships.

In 2021, Ashleigh added another Olympic gold medal to her arsenal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Her 80 saves throughout the games earned her the honor of being named Top Goalkeeper. Johnson hopes to earn her third Olympic gold by leading the team to a first place finish in Paris 2024.

2. Work Hard and Train Smart

There is no substitute for hard work. If you want to excel in your chosen sport, you have to be willing to put in the effort. This means training consistently, and showing up even on days when you don't feel like it. It’s important to also take care of your body and mind.

3. Surround Yourself with Positive People

It's important to have a supportive network of people who believe in you and your dreams. Surround yourself with positive, like-minded individuals who will encourage and motivate you to make the right choices when the going gets tough.

4. Learn from Failure

No athlete is perfect, and setbacks and failures are part of the journey. Every “failure” or misstep is just a re-direction and opportunity to learn what you can do differently next time.

5. Enjoy the Process

Finally, it's crucial to remember that becoming a successful athlete is not just about winning championships. It's also about enjoying the process, learning new things, and making lifelong memories and friends. Embrace the journey, and remember to have fun along the way.
