MOTIVATIONAL MONDAYS // ERIKA HARVEY

Erika Harvey 1

Erika Harvey

Swimmer, Crossfitter, SJSU Graduate, Anthropologist, Swim coach, Explorer, Lady Gaga Fan

If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 things, what would they be: My new western mountaineering down mummy bag that I got for Christmas, a flint knife, and a water purifier.

What's your favorite beach that you have been to: Torrey Pines in San Diego. It’s always clean and clear water. The long sandy beach is great for long boarding or body surfing and you can walk all the way to Blacks beach at low tide. Then if you’re lucky, the dolphins are out playing in the waves.

Who is your favorite athlete: Dana Vollmer

What are 3 things on your bucket list: Travel the world, Hike the PCT (Canada to Mexico), and have a photograph published by Nat. Geo.

If you were 60 years old, what would you tell your children: Go outside everyday, you’ll always find something new. Travel, it always puts life into perspective. And… if you ever have the chance, do a college sport. It’s a priceless experience.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done: In Hawaii, I jumped off a cliff into the ocean from 60 ft with about 4 feet of running distance…first and last time I ever went cliff jumping.

What's your favorite JOLYN style and why: My favorite style is definitely the tie back-triangle top. The reason I got hooked on the Jolyn suits was because they were adjustable unlike any other suit. I’m a swimmer and a crossfitter so I do have a broader upper body which can be difficult when finding a suit that fits comfortably.

If you had to be an animal, what would you be and why: A lion... soaking up that Africa sun all day.

What activities do you do in JOLYN: everything.

How do you like to cross train? or What is your favorite cross training activity:  I like to use many different types of activities for cross training including hiking, open water swimming, climbing, kayaking…any outdoor physical activity really. However, crossfit is one of my favorites because it encompasses so much; including mobility, stationary rowing and biking, jump roping, Olympic lifting, yoga, body weight exercises, every core movement you can think of, medicine balls, resistance bands and running. Being strong in a crossfit gym also allows me to do all the outdoor activities I love doing with ease.

What is your favorite workout or gym exercise: I’ve actually only done it once fully, it’s definitely a workout you have to train and prepare for... but there’s a hero workout called Murph (if you’re a crossfiter you’ll know what I’m talking about), it’s

1 mile run

100 pull-ups

200 push-ups

300 squats

1 mile run

There’s a story that goes with this workout, a movie just came out about they guy it was named after. Long story short my goal was to do it all strict, no girl push-ups, and no stopping. It’s a great workout that leaves you feeling stronger and more confident.

What is your most embarrassing moment you're willing to admit: My junior year in college, it was our first week back to San Jose practice coming off of our summer two weeks off and my coach asked me to demonstrate a “fast"  relay start to the freshman. After being on 3 winning conference relays, nationally ranked relays, Olympic trials and everything else… I got up and I don’t really know what happened, but it wasn't a correct relay exchange. In front of all my teammates who were laughing hysterically and coaches looking confused and speechless, I got up to try again only to catch myself midway to jump in feet first. Lets just say the coaches never asked me to demonstrate anything after that.
